Code of Responsibility

Fijian village culture is a based on traditional protocol, which is still widely followed. It centres around the basis of respect.

As Western influences and the media are constantly challenging traditional customs, a Code of Responsibility has been established to help maintain the fragility of their culture and the environment.  It is important that the Code be respected when you are visiting villages.  By having a basic understanding of some of the protocols, it shows the villagers that you have respect for their way of life and a wider understanding of who they are.

·         It is a condition of booking for both the Homestay and the Adventures Tour that you understand and abide by the Code.

This Code has been established to enhance your enjoyment and your cultural exchange, and to provide the level of respect you would want in your home, when guests are visiting.  More importantly it protects the vulnerability of the traditional Fijian culture as well as the fragile ecosystem.

Furthermore, for your own safety and enjoyment, please always use common sense, as the jungle, beach or reef can be a dangerous place if you are careless or reckless or not thinking about what you are doing..

To make your stay as enjoyable as possible and maintain respect for village life and not cause embarrassment to others and yourself, please understand and observe the following guidelines.  If unsure please contact us before you leave.

10 Golden Rules of Respect

1. When entering a village please remove your hat. Hats are not permitted in the village at any time.

2.   Do not enter a village or house unless invited or welcomed, and do not touch anything unless you ask.

3.     When entering a village for the first time, it is customary to present yourself to the "Ratu" (chief) and present him (or more usually your hosts) "Yaqona" [kava].  Please note that some of your hosts may not drink Yaqona, due to their strict Christian beliefs, but will accept your offering on behalf of the others in the community.  Presenting Yaqona is only a traditional offering and may be relaced by tinned fish, sugar, salt etc.

·     A maximum of one kilogram of Yaqona [approx. FJ$30-$40] is sufficient for presentation.

4.     In the village dress appropriately at all times.

·     For females, this includes covering your shoulders and a "sulu" (or sarong).  Please no bikinis or tank tops in the village.

· Men should also wear a "sulu" when entering a village for the first time or for any ceremonies.

5.    At the beach it is acceptable to wear your bikinis or bathers.

6.    When taking photos of people always ask if it is O.K. with them.  [Most times Fijians enjoy having their photos taken].

7.       If offered "Yaqona" [kava], please accept it, as it is a sign of welcoming and respect.

8.     Take all rubbish home [especially plastics and batteries] with you, as the island does not have a refuse system.  [Glass bottles are O.K, because a recycler on the island collects them, or they can be reused].

9.     Remember when on the tour: "leave nothing but footprints, kill nothing but time, and take nothing but photos and your rubbish".

10.  Finally, ask lots of questions, tell the locals all about yourself and most importantly have a good time.
